Description
This album marked the band’s major debut 50 years ago. It was also the most important longplayer of the band around singer Janis Joplin and is still considered one of the milestones of the ’68 generation. Cheap Thrills was released on 12 August 1968 and went straight to number one. The revised version is now available for the first time under the originally planned original album title Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills, which was rejected at the time as too daring
Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills presents a new, must-have collection of 30 rare performances by the band. Included are 29 studio outtakes (25 of which were previously completely unreleased) from the legendary 1968 recording sessions for the album
Grace Slick, the singer of Jefferson Airplane and David Getz, the drummer of Big Brother & The Holding Company have contributed the liner notes. There Slick writes how she experienced the songs at that time: Then I heard this voice – Great God! – Every feeling it expressed was like a detonation
Reviews
“The way the two guitarists tuned their instruments more often in new keys that are still unknown today (…) is quite fascinating. Vic Anesini has mixed the multitrack tapes as perfectly as possible.” (Stereo, March 2019)
