Description

The Jayhawks’ masterpiece!

Named after “The Hawks” – as in “Levon and the Hawks,” the name of Dylan’s backing band in the 60s before they became known as “The Band” – The Jayhawks and their fellow travelers even helped make the world safe again for artists who weren’t afraid to fuse traditional rock, country and folk influences into something that was both timeless and modern, just like the best American bands always have.

The band’s fourth full-length, 1995’s Tomorrow the Green Grass brings it all back home to simple pleasures, radiant down-home joys and universal fears. It’s apparent from the initial acoustic strums that this is an album that concentrates on the music, not the trends, as the band combines the high lonesome aspects of bluegrass with the rough-edged, pining soulfulness of the Burrito Brothers/Gram Parsons country-rock and the spirit of modern rock.

The Jayhawks then bind it all together with off-center harmonies, infectiously strong melodies, and a powerful narrative sensibility. Whether the subject is suicide, unabashed love, hopelessness or child abuse, it’s presented here with spunk, verve and pained passion.

“Louris and Olson produced a treasure trove of recordings in the early to mid-‘90s, a bunch of which ended up on “Hollywood Town Hall” and “Tomorrow the Green Grass” albums. Those albums sound as good as ever.”
