Mike Kinsella’s work over the years with his various musical endeavors has been nothing short of foundational, from early days with Cap’n Jazz right up to the legacy of American Football, who in the last few years have returned with their third act complete with shows across the globe, and side project LIES. Even with his long list of contributions to course- setting bands, Kinsella never reveals more of his internal world than he does with the softly drawn songs of his long running solo project Owen. New album The Falls Of Sioux follows the refined, spacious musical landscapes of 2020’s The Avalanche, which shied away from Kinsellla’s trademark sarcasm and wry humour and instead offered a winking dismissal of negative thoughts, took songs into even darker places. This collection of songs, recorded with S. Carey (Bon Iver, Peter Gabriel) and engineer Zach Hanson (The Tallest Man On Earth, Waxahatchee) at Eau Claire in Wisconsin, sees Kinsella explore such themes further, resulting in some of the best Owen songs ever penned.
