Wu-Tang Clan\u2019s own Cappadonna connects with acclaimed producer Stu Bangas for a lyrically potent, sonically raw new album, 3rd Chamber Grail Bars. The album follows strong 2021 releases from both artists, Donna\u2019s Black Tarrzann and Stu\u2019s Deathwish, and it represents the emcee\u2019s first full-length collaboration with a single producer. The result is a tight, cohesive listen full of sharp verses, neck-snapping instrumentals, and some stellar guest features.<\/p>\n
The two first worked together on the Wu rapper\u2019s 2013 album, Eyrth, Wynd & Fyre, when Stu produced a pair of notable cuts (\u201cWe Hood Rich Now\u201d and \u201cChains\u201d). \u201cI knew that he was feeling the beats,\u201d Stu said. \u201cAnd I saw an opportunity to reach out to him and took it.\u201d They reconnected via industry A&R, M-Eighty, who provided Donna with a folder of instrumentals from the producer. And for the emcee, the timing was perfect because of how the beats \u201cfit my mood and energy in the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
The energy is one of a time-tested lyricist with a lot on his mind\u2014and plenty of clever ways to get his point across. You can hear that on the piano-laced, eerie \u201cContinuous Threat\u201d with Planet Asia, as well as the straight-up dope \u201cTryna Survive\u201d featuring ILL BILL. Both tracks showcase Donna\u2019s gifts with the pen as well as his talents as a collaborator. Other standouts include the raucous \u201cBring It Out,\u201d which also happens to be Stu\u2019s favorite cut on the LP. \u201cI love everything about it\u2014the beat, the intro, the subject matter of the verses, the raw hook, all of it,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
As you\u2019ll hear on the album, it\u2019s clear that it was created not only for the love of the culture, but also out of mutual respect for the other artist. Stu referred to 3rd Chamber Grail Bars as \u201ca life goal of mine that I have checked off,\u201d while Donna had glowing praise for his collaborator. \u201cStu\u2019s catalog may be as great, iIf not greater, than any producer I can name,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
