{"id":37799,"date":"2023-02-11T15:39:40","date_gmt":"2023-02-11T14:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vinylgrove.nl\/?post_type=product&#038;p=37799"},"modified":"2023-12-16T16:49:23","modified_gmt":"2023-12-16T15:49:23","slug":"sopwith-camel","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/vinylgrove.nl\/index.php\/product\/sopwith-camel\/","title":{"rendered":"Sopwith Camel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reissue: 10-02-2023 (C 1967)<\/p>\n<p>Sopwith Camel&#8217;s first album (and only album recording during the 1960s), the eponymous\u00a0<span class=\"em\">Sopwith Camel<\/span>, was released in 1967 on the\u00a0<span class=\"internalLink\">Kama Sutra Records<\/span>\u00a0label.\u00a0The single &#8220;Hello, Hello&#8221; became the first hit to emerge from the San Francisco rock scene and reached No.\u00a026 on the US\u00a0<span class=\"internalLink\"><span class=\"em\">Billboard<\/span>\u00a0Hot 100<\/span>\u00a0chart in January 1967 and No.\u00a09 on the Canadian\u00a0<span class=\"em\"><span class=\"internalLink\">RPM<\/span><\/span>\u00a0magazine chart in February. A second hit, &#8220;Postcard from Jamaica&#8221;, peaked at No. 88 on the\u00a0<span class=\"em\">Billboard<\/span>\u00a0Hot 100 in April 1967. Some songs on the band&#8217;s first album, the\u00a0<span class=\"internalLink\">vaudevillian<\/span>\u00a0&#8220;Hello, Hello&#8221; in particular, were more reminiscent of earlier songs by\u00a0<span class=\"internalLink\">The Lovin&#8217; Spoonful<\/span>\u00a0than of most other San Francisco psychedelic rock of the time; producer\u00a0<span class=\"internalLink\">Erik Jacobsen<\/span>\u00a0produced for both Sopwith Camel and The Lovin&#8217; Spoonful.\u00a0On the other hand, &#8220;Frantic Desolation&#8221; was chosen by\u00a0<span class=\"internalLink\">Jon Savage<\/span>\u00a0as one of &#8220;The Psychedelic 100&#8221;, an annotated list first published as a booklet by\u00a0<span class=\"internalLink\">Mojo Magazine<\/span>\u00a0and reprinted in the book\u00a0<span class=\"em\">I Want to Take You Higher: The Psychedelic Era 1965\u20131969<\/span>\u00a0(an accompaniment to an exhibit of the same name), published by\u00a0<span class=\"internalLink\">The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum<\/span>\u00a0(Chronicle Books, 1997). The band was unable to follow up the success of their first album and hit single and disbanded later in 1967.\u00a0Sopwith Camel&#8217;s debut album has been re-released twice: as\u00a0<span class=\"em\">Frantic Desolation<\/span>\u00a0in 1986, and as\u00a0<span class=\"em\">Hello Hello Again<\/span>\u00a0in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>The band was defunct by the end of 1967.\u00a0Beard and Mayell continued for a period in music, as\u00a0<span class=\"internalLink\">session musicians<\/span>\u00a0under the direction of Eric Jacobsen. Both appeared on\u00a0<span class=\"internalLink\">Norman Greenbaum<\/span>&#8216;s hit album\u00a0<span class=\"em\"><span class=\"internalLink\">Spirit in the Sky<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(1969). Mayell later joined\u00a0<span class=\"internalLink\">Blue Cheer<\/span>, replacing\u00a0<span class=\"internalLink\">Paul Whaley<\/span>\u00a0as drummer.<\/p>\n<p>Tracklist:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">01.
