There\u2019s the rumbling, Motown-style rhythm that propels \u201cTrust,\u201d and the straightforward riff-rock of \u201cTurnstile Casanova.\u201d The drone-y \u201cThe Old Pack Mule,\u201d an \u201cold man\u2019s song\u201d that takes musical cues from 1600s-era European music, and \u201cLife\u2019s a Bloody Show,\u201d an ode to \u201csnake-oil salesmen and hucksters\u201d that floats on a glammy, cabaret-like melody that\u2019s \u201calmost like a parody of a No\u00ebl Coward song, or something from Berlin in the 1920s,\u201d Thompson says. \u201cI liked the idea of having a strong base to work from and reaching out from there,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I think of my base as being British traditional music, but there\u2019s also Scottish music, there\u2019s Irish music. There\u2019s jazz and country and classical. As far as I\u2019m concerned, once you establish your base you can reach out anywhere.
